Meta post in which I pretend to know what I'm talking about.

So remember how I said the other day how I wanted to talk about New!Spock vs. Old!Spock. Well the time has come my friends. Put on your geek hats and follow me to the land of the future. Heh. Okay, I'm just kidding. Oh, but let me say this first, I watched Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home this morning. And OMG, I can totally see why many people keep saying that this movie is their favourite in the Star Trek universe. It is amazing!! So very funny! I loved it. It was great!! Still not better than the new movie (which I saw in the theatre again on Saturday night - again, so awesome!!) I think I liked it even better the second time. I understood a lot more about the Kirk/Spock dynamic and I understood so much more of the back story (or should I say future story??) During the first time I saw it, I had read some people's reviews and I understood them to mean there was real slash in the movie. So I kept looking for it. And I didn't see any. And I was confused. I re-read those reviews and finally got they just meant a whole lot of pre-slash. So the second time, I was just squeeing the whole time. It was awesome.

Oh, another sidenote. My dad (who finally saw the movie on Friday) and I had a long discussion on the movie last night. It was pretty cool. And I totally blame him for this new obsession, because he started it many years ago when he introduced me to TNG.

Anyways, onto my Spock thoughts:

Let me start off by saying, I love Spock. He's the embodiment of awesome. His quirked eyebrows make me squee. Zachary Quinto was amazing in the movie. While he didn't sell Spock to me (simply because I didn't need selling, I was sold on Spock thanks to Leonard Nimoy) he was so very good. And so very hot. Not as hot as Chris Pine (omg SEXY!) but sexy all the same. I would totally do him. When he was in the lift with Uhuru and hugging her, I so wanted that to be me in his arms. Anyways, I digress. One thing that has bothered me is the clinical way in which Quinto has played Spock. Basically without a spark of emotion. I know there were snippets. Like when Kirk and Spock are in the Jellyfish and he starts to tell Kirk to tell Uhuru something should he not make it. We never find out what he wants to tell her, but I assume it's some kind of undying love something. Also, in the lift when Spock and Uhuru are hugging before he pulls himself together there;s a moment when his face is buried in her hair and he seems on the verge of crying. Awww! So sweet! And in the transporter room, although I mainly was snickering at the looks on Kirk's and Scotty's face. So funny!! Anyways, so yes. Hardly any emotion (I'm not mentioning the times when Spock loses control because that was provoked, not him showing the emotion on his own). I found the words he spoke, the way he spoke them, he *almost* sounded Android like. As in Commander Data. Of TNG. Not completely Android-like. But almost. He says things in a Data-way. My dad disagrees. He says he was very Nimoy-like from TOS. I don't necessarily agree though. From what I've seen of TOS, Spock does manage to show more emotion than he did in the movie.

During the mind meld scene between Kirk and Old!Spock, Old!Spock definitely shows tons of emotions. But he's much older and has had a lifetime of friendship (and lovers) with humans and has experienced all that emotion, so he would be more emotional at 229 years old (or whatever age he was - I can't be arsed to look it up right now) than at 31 years old (or again, whatever age New!Spock is).

Now I have justified Quinto's behaviour being way more emtionless than Nimoy's in TOS. In TOS, the crew of the enterprise is not brand-new. They've worked together. Kirk and Spock have been friends for a few years already. Spock would have already experienced the emotions that come with friendship. So he would have been used to showing emotion, to an extent. To worrying and caring for those he calls friends (ie. Kirk). And if fanon is to be believed, he would have known love too, on a different level than that of his love for his mother. I am talking, of course about Kirk. If they were lovers (and I'm sure they were) I would like to assume it was about love, and not just convenience. However, in the new movie, Spock does not have any friends. His relationship with Uhuru aside (and let's assume that that is mainly physical). Sure he has colleagues, but no best friends. And he hates Kirk to begin with, and who can blame him for that. Kirk is egotistical, cocky, and trying to steal his job. Not to mention he had the nerve to mention his just-dead mother. But he's so hot (whoever decided on Chris Pine as Kirk should be given a medal!) so you can forgive him for the cockiness. So with no friends, no emotions to lead by example, he would be more clinical, more Android, more logical.

So really, I don't know if I have a point here. But I felt like writing this all down. I'm not trying to criticize anyone, but it's just something that struck me as a bit odd.
